From a kitchen experiment during COVID to a beloved Australian beverage โ this is how Chikori Choc Around the Clock came to life.
Elizabeth’s journey โ from kitchen experiments to markets across Australia
I was drinking beverages daily, but I started to get bored with the taste of coffee, tea & herbal teas. I always liked mixing different ingredients to create something tasty to drink or eat.
Most times they didn’t work out and it would be thrown to the birds or in the garden. I have always made people laugh unintentionally with my crazy antics. I even did some stand up comedy and created a parody for menopausal women.
Occasionally I would make something amazing to eat or drink but never wrote the recipe down so that I could make it again.
Then one day in 2021 whilst going through COVID, I looked in the cupboard and thought, what do I like in a beverage. Spices & Cacao โ but it needed a foundation.
I remembered trying chicory on its own and found it bitter and bland. This is when I started playing around with it. I would make it daily for myself to drink in the late afternoon when I really wanted a hot and fulfilling drink that was virtually caffeine-free.
“It was a lot of trial and error. I decided to write the spoon measurements down finally, so that I could enjoy the same taste of my beverage consistently.”
Soon family and friends were wanting to try it. I was told to market it. I didn’t even know what that meant. LOL.
After speaking with a family friend who is a very successful entrepreneur, he advised that I need to get the precise measurements for the brew. This was very hard. A lot of taste testing.
Then with the help of my mathematical minded son, we finally got it.
I thought this is it, but alas, my journey had just begun. I then had to get a name for it. After some guidance and research, my intuition came at me with CHIKORI CHOC AROUND THE CLOCK.
The name was fun and honoured the product, which can be drunk around the clock safely, even for kids.
“With all natural ingredients, no sugar or sweeteners, and blended by me at home – it really is old school! An instant hit with my family, and I hope yours too!”
โ Elizabeth, Creator of Chikori ChocIt tasted just as good or even better while cold, I found out to my surprise. One day when I had prepared it and got busy, I left it on the bench for hours.
I then went back to drink it cold and it was truly like gingerbread in a cup. This stuff wouldn’t even go bad if left there โ it got better in taste.
I then discovered the benefits of chicory, being a prebiotic โ meaning specialised plant fibres that act as “food” for beneficial gut bacteria.
A natural, healthy & yummy brew that I could drink hot or cold, around the clock, that I have found to even curb my sugar cravings at times. It was truly invigorating on its own, or sometimes I would mix it with my coffee to give it a punch, with zero jitters.
When I found out that coffee and Chikori Choc taste great together, I knew I could have the best of both worlds.
And now I would like to share it with you, and your family.
This comforting beverage blend, handmade in small batches in my own kitchen, can be enjoyed hot or cold, anytime day or night. It combines roasted chicory root with rich dark cacao, bursts of ginger and warming spices for a full-bodied sip that feels like a hug in a cup.
Perfect even as late as 11pm, it lets you unwind without disrupting sleep. When it cools naturally, the flavours evolve into a cozy gingerbread taste โ reminiscent of Christmas warmth.
Hot over ice cream for a decadent treat.
Mix with your coffee for a less caffeinated, healthier brew.
Enjoy it on its own as your go-to daily ritual.
Chicory is a blue-flowered Mediterranean plant of the daisy family. The leaves are edible & used in salads. The root is roasted and ground, offering a nutty, slightly sweet, and bitter flavour similar to coffee.
The chicory root first found its way into coffee beans in France in the 19th century. Prior to its addition to caffeinated beverages, the plant was largely medicinal, used to treat things like enlarged liver or jaundice.
